island bridges

Problem with that is... what if there are no trees on the other side?
Where would that brave Bricktron get the wood?

That is a conundrum. Perhaps our bricktron would have to carry a few planks across with him in some sort of backpack, and maybe make multiple trips. Of course this would make our hero's job even more difficult, and perhaps add a chance for him to fall (I can imagine his fellow workers watching nervously from the other side, encouraging him onward).

Airships are already somewhat confirmed by the developers, so maybe it can ferry resources over to build towards the center on both sides, and there are always suspension bridges if implemented.

So after watching the new video, I believe I understand the way bridges are built, but this doesn't apply to very large distances or seperate islands.

So, the bridge from the video. Here´s how I think it is built.
It starts with the bricks, on both sides. So you need to already have access to the other side, thus making this impossible with seperate islands.
After the bricks are built, they (and I haven't thought about how they do this) throw the log over the other side. I marked it in the picture (badass paint skills).
Doing this allows them to build wood (the actual bridge) above the gap.

If a gap between seperate islands isn't that big, they could throw the log over, without building the bricks construction first.

But, unfortunately I have no clue on how you would be able to do this if the gap between islands is too big, and you don't have access to it.

I am still hoping for a suspension type system for the bridges themselves, so that we may span large spaces.

Well the catapult is in the game already..... just catapult the poor bricktron and material needed. :D That would work for both lower and higher islands.
    Intradox and yoyo like this.

That seems cruel xD! What if you miss? You'd lose a valuable Bricktron!

The catapult does just sound cruel, launch the bricktrons at their enemies and kill them with your girth!

Can't you just make a simple bridge???
It seems possible, but I guess based on the lengths of the blocks this won't be very useful for islands far away because it needs some support below it.
Well, which of these seems the most likely? o_O

I say the simple beam bidge.

The beam bridge is basically what they have right now. The suspension/cable/cantilever bridges won't work though. Where would the pier/tower go? Since these are not mountains, but floating islands.
  11. kakashi Member

I'm not sure, but maybe we could even find a way out on how to make a arch bridge
    [IMG]
That might work because it only needs two towers to support it.

Let me complete my idea.... Give the bricktron a little parachute so that he can float to the ground safely. The islands are big so how are you going to mis it?
  13. HuMoDz New Member

We could use balloons to sustain the bridge
  14. Gimpster Member

It all comes down to how the engine lets us place bricks. Spanning gaps will most likely have to be done with beams. Beams can only be extended a set number of units from its anchor point. Currently that appears to be 6 units. Now until the other end of the beam is supported only bricktrons can walk on the beam, but they can be carrying objects. I am sure we will find out soon how it works and what the limits are, when the prototype is released.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but when a Bricktron uses a parachute to traverse from island to island, wouldn't he fall as in my crappy illustration? Or, is the parachute just for travel on the island?

try read my post The island hearth.
We could use the same magic that keep the island floating to sustain the piers, but we need a crane to place the pier (see my other post : Building Crane ).

This will make a suspended bridge expensive (as it should) because you must have : a crane, the knowledge and resource to use the "floating magic")

The chute should only deploy when he is going down. Just so landing is not a "splat"..
  18. Edward Member

well they already have catapults way not shoot a boulder to an other island with a rope on it then let a bricktron climb the robe with a rambo animation :) then on the other side they can do the same the shooting an other boulder back and connect planks to the rope

And sorry but i rly hate mages its a WoW thing :D mechanics FTW

How about a spell for the wizard that pulls an island in your direction, then they slam into each other and you get to spend time picking up the mess left over. That would be great!;)

I'm going to guess that longer bridges will be built with one of the many types of crystals that can be found. Some sort of gravity defying crystal which can be used as anchors/building points in mid-air for bridges.

Although I can think of a few nifty uses for such crystals in my castle as well..
