Mechanisms

My idea would be somewhat like Minecraft's redstone but MUCH less complex. Maybe simple things like using levers and such to open doors or activate traps maybe even have a piston type block The materials (crystals rare metals ect) would be hard to obtain and endgame but would provide a way to counter more powerful or smarter enemies

They should not be thinking or comparing their game to minecraft, its unique

My idea is that you would manage to get some rope,I have not thought of a way to get the rope, but I have thought of multiple uses for the said rope.Chain could be made of iron and you can find iron, well in the ground, and then you can make iron into the chains which drawbridge requir to work and to make more complex machinery
1.You can make mechanisms like levers or pulleys to open or close gates and drawbridge
2.Chain would be required to lift a drawbridge while gates just need a pulley
3.If,IF!Water is implemented into the game there should be watermills of some sort which can power pulleys
4.Along with watermills there could be windmills, which could require more materials but produce a faster amount of power
5.Levers and buttons could also be used to activate items,so to open the gate, you must have a pulley system and a button connected to it.
6.How would the "power" be taken from a lever to a gate?Magic?Exactly, pulleys would be bulkier and can break, but magic cant,so magic would most likely be endgame
7.Also how would an average bricktron use magic?Thats like wiring your own houses power up!And you are not an electrician,it would require some training,As in a mage!

I Think this game has some obvious similaritys to minecraft but I agree completely That it is unique and If i wanted to play minecraft I wouldn't Have pledged the 25 bucks on the kickstater I simply thought that with a similar player base, redstone would bring to mind the general idea of my suggestion.

Try not to be rude. It has plenty of simularities to minecraft. Give the guy a chance.

fine, srry saber i suppose its an idea to consider, but new members have a tendency to compare it to minecraft, but i dont like that. although both are voxel games, they r very different.

As DMII so eloquently put it:
"It's because Minecraft is the most popular blocky sandbox game. You use the most popular game as a comparison, because that way the most people will know what you are talking about. Sorry, but everyones logic apparently is not what you think it is."

As for being on topic, they have said there will be drawbridges and traps, so im assuming there will be chain/rope/levers to control all of that.

IF water is implimented i would hope for a pumping system so that IF there is watermills imagine buckets on a rope pulling water up to a high spot only to drop down that wheel's path nearby again..

a sort of 'infinite' water power system or a windmill could work with the downside of waiting between currents of wind. that goes alone the lines of rope and such.

Bah, I will be happy with water to fill my moat with....

    Water would be fantastic!
  11. If your moat is drained by an unsuspecting tunneller, then what? :(

Then i have just flooded his tunnel... and i refill my moat.
  13. You can only refill your moat so many times before the lake is drained though. You'll need some sort of pump system in the end.

Actually, mechanisms/levers and so-forth seems like a fantastic idea, which would add on to the game.
Perhaps you want to create a elaborate flood trap using floodgates? A base self-destruction switch for the entertainment?
Giving a bit of complexity and creative ability: players can make amazing, fun devices.

Also: Stop comparing it to Minecraft... It obviously should be compared to Dwarf fortress.
  15. Saber2243 Member

IT SHOULD BE COMPARED TO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME
    lol

Considering the game uses blocks to build things, it's similarities to Minecraft exist. It's also very Dwarf Fortress-esque (which MC was inspired by as well). in fact CS was originally inspired by Sourceforts which is a HL2 Mod. Just because people compare it to these games doesn't make it those games. Castle Story draws from many things. and improves upon them IMO. Please stop being so nitpicky about what people say it reminds them of and what it looks like. cause it looks and reminds people of a lot of stuff and there's no reason to berate or belittle others for it. /rant

back OT: Mechanisms are awesome, I would love to see a simple implementation of them. nothing quite on the level of Redstone in MC, but simple things, traps (which they've said are probable) as well as movable gates/doors/bridges. As for water, if it's in, they may add some sort of rain mechanic that can replenish lakes or have a water spring where water is generated infinitely (From Dust is a game that used these).

It should be compared to what ever people feel they can relate it to themselves.

Simple mechanism would be the way to go and Keisers ideas sound awesome.
  18. That sounds good. Would make some more use of the magic crystals too. Stab a crystal on top and turn the crank. RAIN!

While mechanisms would be cool, there is really a fine line that needs to be taken with this kind of game. Minecraft you dig away blocks yourself, set the traps or whatever your wanting to implement, and then go back and fill in everything that is not part of the system (and often do this in a mode without enemies). I could not say about dwarf fortress, but I challenge you to work out how your idea could be implemented within the castle story as you see it already. Remember that a bricktron needs to be able to install and operate everything you put in as this is not first person and that from what i have seen this is a castle designing strategy game, not a complete sandbox game.

From this, these are some cool features that could be implemented. (starting off basic)
Pit Trap - just a wooden platform that is installed in the normal way, with the added auto trigger when non allied units walk over they fall into whatever is below the floor
Rock Trap - same as the pit trap but it would just open when someone walks under
Drawbridge - just basic moving platform with potentially a pulley and winch as they could just be installed in the castle easily without remodelling or dismantling half the castle.

    Some more questionable
Wind/Water mill - Either with a stream or just built high enough that blades don't touch the ground.
Power Transfer - Straight line rotational shafts with 90 degree gearing to change angles. You would need access top and bottom of the shaft for installation.
Pump - Requires a power shaft to be directly connected to the back, with a input pip on on side and an output pipe on the other.
Pipes - I can only see these being implemented as above ground pipes for bricktron installation. Nice big round things that take up a block size with 90 degree bends

From here, this is my closing scene

There is this incredible underground fortress that that you just cannot get near without being overwhelmed by archers (lol to the Overpowered Thread, I wont cast a vote either way till we can play). So you blockade their entire troop base in their own cavern so they cannot see what your doing and start building a pumping system up the mountain they are in. Dig down, until you have breached the cavern roof then start pumping away!!!
    Fog of war fun!!!

Dont take the overpower-speculations too serious, we ppl there are just concerned about balancing issues or, in other words, that the game may be too simple with just a few neat and easy constructions.
