Minimap

I don't recall seeing one but I think a minimap would be cool. Maybe it wouldn't be to detailed. It would be cool knowing where the brickguys are cause they could be hard to find.

Not sure if it is really usefull right now, i'd like a minimal HUD. :)

We all like a nice clean HUD

but I think a mini map would be good considering it has floating islands and the camera is birds eye view, it would make it easier to navigate the world

It would be good to have some sort of sense for direction (don't know if I'm saying that right, oh well :))

Minimap? Perhaps. We'll se about that. As others, I think a minimal, clean HUD would be great.

I think this is a must have, considering the fact that is a strategy game.

    Pros with having a minimap:
    Makes the game more strategic/difficult.
    Cons:
    May clutter the UI
Kinda takes away the medieval 'blindness'. There may be FOW. If not, this argument is invalid.
  8. If there was a minimap, it would have to deal with the fact that floating islands are not at the same altitude, one may be hidden behind another island, so a basic 2d minimap wouldn't work, they'd have to develop some sort of 3d one but the aesthetics of one wouldn't compliment the UI imo

A mini-map would be great, but as CaptainScarlett wrote above me, islands might not be on the same altitude. a different solution is needed.

The chances of two islands being one on the top of the other, are, at the saw of the apparent maximum altitude, pretty low. I think simply having a direct 2D view from the top would be enough, if our Bricktrons are there.

in the video there seems to be a very small island below another larger island. im not sure if it is directly below though. you guys could determine for yourselves. its at 00:23 of the video.

    edit: also at 9:23

Your Pros quite frankly are nonsense. A Minimap doesn't make a game more strategic or difficult. It allows you to keep track of things outside of your view, which means, that players are able to react better to enemies and are less likely to simply forget about units outside of their sight. Also it makes navigating around a map a lot easier, because you always have a sense of direction. So it rather makes the game easier.
Also, fog of war is no con. Having a minimap doesn't mean, that everything is shown on it. If something is in the fog of war, it simply doesn't appear on the minimap. That's how countless RTS games have been doing it, so why should this be different?

And I don't know, how a Minimap could clutter the UI. For normal, they occupy a corner of the screen, which is as far away from hindering sight as you can get.

Having no minimap in an RTS probably makes it a candidate for the trash can. At least that's what I think about it. With overlapping Islands however, a Minimap in 3D is probably necessary. Looking at the whole map (heavily simplified of course) from the same angle the player camera has could be a good solution.

Imo, it does make it more strategic as the opponent may notice your troops at any time, so just rushing in may not be the best idea.

Nowhere did I say that is a con... :D
IF there is a fog of war, then you can scratch that entire line.
IF there is NOT a FOW you could directly see what everyone is up tp.

No need to take things seriously here. :)

Well without the minimap, you could scroll to your enemy and see what they do. Unless there is fow. I thinks that's more a matter of there being fow or not ^^

Your post looked like it listed pros and cons, so I thought it would be a con. ^^

Only as an exception to a con. :p

I think we would be alright with a minimal who just shows blocks in 2D from above. Rather than navigating in the 3D map, you could jut go look by yourself.

For a joke it was surprisingly not funny.
