Replayability and Longevity of the Game Question

Discussion in 'Questions [ARCHIVED]' started by Lucasito182, Sep 12, 2012.

    Hi Guys,

First of all -- I AM VERY HAPPY AND EXCITED ABOUT THE GAME! I AM SO HAPPY THAT THE EMAIL ARRIVED IN MY INBOX JUST A FEW MINUTES AGO AND I AM SO PUMPED! I CAN'T WAIT!

    Now to my question --

I watched this video and heard the guy (I am not sure which one) say that "The goal of the game is to create castles and defend it..". Then I thought, that sounds fun... But I am actually wondering about the replayability and the longevity of the game. I mean, how does it work? We'll play today, create a castle, wait for guys to kill us or live... then we won? Or is it more long term like I'll create a small hut, then gradually grow my castle until I have the biggest castle in all of castlestory history?

As most of us all know, this game has been referred to as "minecraft-ish" and we all know how open ended the world of minecraft is... Please don't get me wrong. I just want to wrap around my head on what to expect on the game. I know it's on pre-alpha stage and stuff so please before anyone bashes me "please wait you *&#$, the game is still in pre-alpha", please know that I am aware of that... I just want an idea from the devs what the game will really look like.. Will it be more like a one game, one time, repeat and repeat RTS (like dota, starcraft skirmishes) or will it be like Minecraft? or will it be like the sims 2?

THANKS GUYS and I am so excited!! :)

I beleive its open-ended... it should be anyway!

So yes you have a bit of time to create a castle and then you defend it, and you keep expanding and defending it pretty much forever, or that is our interpretation anyway. And since the maps will be fairly random (procedural with some had-crafted bits I believe is the probable map type) new maps will always be different. It should have a very high replay value due to the creative nature of the game, allowing for all sorts of wierd and wonderful things to be made.

And as if that were not enough, there is also probably a multiplayer component for competitve play, and possibly cooperative as well.

Plus on the forums all sorts of additional ideas are being thought up... It'd be criminal if there weren't a sandbox with no enemies for just epic castle building, and it'd be nice to have some other more unique modes too!

as bill has mentioned, there are several options we could see here, we just dont know for sure yet... :)

all we know from SP is the basic premise for the game:

what "end game" there might be, or other modes we might have is still very much up in the air (at least, for us)...

That IS awesome. I'm reading the dev diaries and the blogs now and I'm getting more ideas - ANIMALS AND CRITTERS! They will add those!! :)

I can imagine the game in my head - I hope it will be really awesome and with the support we give to these people, I'm sure we'll have a year or two of frequent updates, new content, etc. I LOVE INDIE GAMING! :)

And please, don't think that I am a forum marketer or something but I found this --- http://indiegamestand.com/ a few hours back. It works like HumbleBundle in a sense that you pay what you want for the game but it changes every 96 hours or so... So every 96 hours, a different game. I hope they release castlestory on this site as well. I want to buy 2 copies more of the game for my partner and my friend. :)) I AM so excited. I am glad Torchlight2 is coming so that I have something to entertain myself with until December or January (beta arrival). If I didn't, I'd be dead stuck in Diablo 3... I'm playing Terraria now and I like the game but I just can't appreciate the looks...

Anyways, thanks!! Awesome answer. I am so excited for the game

Please use the Edit button in the future. ;)
    SP = Sauropod Studios. :p
I guess this game will keep me busy quiet a while. Experimenting with structures, physics and the environment. Testing the limits of the game. How high could a tower possibly be? :D What amazing mazes can I create? Building a castle inside a mountain and stuff like that. It's somewhat like playing with Lego. You build crazy stuff, destroy it and think about even more weird structures you could build. xD

Edit or quote button? :)) Sorry I am a forum noob. I don't usually go into forums and ask questions and interact with people. I google stuff and get my answers so sorry for being such a forum noob. :D

Anyways, YEAH. Thanks for that. I've been watching the videos again and again and a lot of ideas come into mind. :) THey say that you can create bridges between floating islands so... Why not create a castle in between islands?? HAHAHA AWESOME game. I am kinda embarrassed that I only donated $15.

not a big deal really, but you had made two posts in a row.. the second post was when you asked about what SP stood for...

it was suggested that you simply edit your original post, and add your new question...

    thats all... :)

HAHAHAHAH I see what you mean. But those posts are 40 minutes apart. Will you be notified that I edited the post? Thanks dude

yes, because at that time, no one had repled AFTER your first post... so it would have been simple enough to just read your original post, with the included edits... :)

Also a tip is to write your post then if you have something else to say and nobody has replied you do this.

EDIT: And add your new thing here. Thus if someone had already read it they'd see that this bit is new, if its just a new question or statement.

Got the same questions running through my brain (about gameplay / Lucasito182)
The answer that seemed logical to me : mods x)
Hope the game will be moddable enough to make it last "4eva"

The problem with mods is that they are using the Unity engine, which is great for a few things, but from what I know, modding with it is not the easiest thing to do. Hope SP can make it happen though (even if i will still use the vanilla, always have, always will, no matter how ugly a game, just dont care about graphics)

I think since the terrain is semi-random, that will assist with the replayability factor, and hopefully even if mod support is minimal/nonexistent, Sauropod will continue to release updates to the game that add new gameplay elements and help renew the game for those who've gotten a bit tired of it.

absolutely! if you think about it, mini-expansions can be as simple as new handcrafted islands that offer a quest line, or just some new gameplay feature that the team wants to show off... login, update your client, and *voila* new island to explore...

Plus, once you have a castle, why not make a bigger one? Or try to make a new one with a single bricktron (challenge mode)
or try to survive and explore without building a castle
or trying to play without crystals
to sum up: make your own challenges

I think that only multiplayer can give you replayability and longevity. It's easy to beat AI in every single RTS game.

Unless you sit down and have like a 16-hour marathon Castle Story session, I highly doubt you'll get bored with CS in one sitting; therefore, you will come back to play again; therefore, re play ability :)

Besides, CS isn't just about "beating the AI", it's about building and exploring. The question isn't whether the game has replayability, it's how much replayability does it have?
